Theology vs. The Heart

1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart
Jeremiah 17:10
“I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.
Psalm 44:21
Would not God find this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart.
As people our first inclination to search for God is with our intellect. Perhaps, it is natural to do so and we are all hungry to know and to understand the intricacies of God. For the Bible scholars, some take great comfort in their knowledge and understanding of scripture. Consequently, when it comes right down to it, how then do we evaluate the results when examining an individual?
At the end of the day, we may conclude if knowledge of God was a matter of intellect, then most of us would be left out in the cold, unable to grasp the simple concept of God as a proverbial form of love.
Love, in this manner is obtained and responded to, not so much as a matter of intellect, but as a matter of the heart. In this way, we respond in accordance to our desires. Let’s face it: often times, our desires are horrible and wrong, and so goes our thinking for it is dictated by our desires.
Luke 6:44-45
Sanctification will be seen and heard “for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Matthew 15:19
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies
The bible makes this clear to me, for I desire not all of the debatable scripture that flows from theologies, but a pure heart and pure mind.
The religious leaders of Christ’s day were fluent in theology, yet possessed contaminated and corrupt hearts. Too, words are cheap. A pure heart and mind is expressed by direct actions of service to others. In short, reject the tenets of perfect religious speech and embrace the cleanliness of the heart as it is purified by the saving blood of Jesus.
